Duchess Kate Wore Princess Diana's Sapphire Earrings to Trooping the Colour

Duchess Kate made an entrance by horse-drawn carriage today at the Trooping the Colour parade. The Duchess of Cambridge was a vision in an ivory coat dress by Alexander McQueen, but her jewelry made sure to honor her husband's late mother, Princess Diana.

The sapphire-and-diamond earrings Kate wore previously belonged to Diana, who showed them off on various occasions, including at the Met Gala in 1996, when she paired them with a navy slipdress and a matching sapphire-and-pearl choker.

Diana also wore the jewelry during the iconic dance she shared with John Travolta at the White House, as well as on a trip to Ottawa, Canada, and for a performance of Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro at the Munich Opera House during an official visit to Germany.

Kate finished her look today with a navy blue hat with white trim by Philip Treacy, a sapphire-and-diamond necklace that matched her earrings, and her iconic 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire engagement ring, which also belonged to Diana.

Over the years, Kate has honored Diana by wearing her jewelry and mirroring her style on special occasions. The sapphire ring is perhaps the most famous piece of jewelry she inherited from Prince William and Prince Harry's late mother. The stunning piece was created by British jeweler Garrard and given to Diana by Prince Charles after his proposal in 1981. When she died, it was passed down to her sons, and in 2010, William used it to propose to Kate at the foothills of Mount Kenya.
